Position Description:
Brown Play School, a long-standing, small, private, non-profit preschool in Rumford, Rhode Island, is seeking a Director / Administrative Lead to oversee the day-to-day operations and long-term health of the school. This role replaces a retiring Director and is ideal for a highly organized, collaborative leader committed to early childhood education and community-based schooling.
This position is intentionally broad and may be shaped based on the experience and strengths of the successful candidate. We welcome applicants with prior Director experience as well as strong administrative leaders ready to step into an operational leadership role within a school setting.
Brown Play School is an intentional community of educators and families, grounded in a Reggio Emilia–inspired philosophy, serving children ages 3–5 with a morning program and extended day options.
Primary responsibilities include:
• Overseeing daily school operations ensuring a safe, well-maintained, and compliant environment
• Directs comprehensive facility operations for the school property, including lease management and coordinating with external vendors to manage essential services including professional cleaning, seasonal landscaping, and emergency snow removal
• Supporting and collaborating with teaching staff through meetings, evaluations, and staffing coordination, while ensuring alignment with RIELS standards and the school’s educational philosophy
• Managing recruitment and enrollment for the school year and summer program, serving as the primary point of contact for prospective families, and overseeing contracts, tuition tracking, and enrollment communications
• Coordinating outreach and marketing efforts, including Open House, website updates, and seasonal communications
• Supporting child evaluations and coordination with outside support services as needed, and planning enrichment programming such as music, yoga, and woodworking
• Communicating regularly with families through newsletters, mailings, and school updates, and helping plan family and community events
• Overseeing day-to-day financial administration, including QuickBooks, payroll coordination, bill payment, and tuition tracking, and collaborating with the Board Treasurer and accountant on budgeting, audits, and annual filings
• Ensuring all licensing, inspections, and regulatory requirements are current; maintaining required student and staff records; and preparing materials for monthly Board meetings and governance support

• Experience in early childhood education, school administration, or nonprofit operations

• Comfort with enrollment management, budgeting, and basic financial oversight
• Familiarity with (or willingness to learn) licensing, compliance, and nonprofit governance
• Alignment with play-based, child-centered learning philosophies

Additional features of the position:
The role follows a school-year schedule from late August through June and includes a short summer camp program. The school is closed for July and August, with limited summer administrative responsibilities. This is an approximately 35-hour per week, salaried position, with flexibility based on role scope and season, and offers the opportunity to shape and grow the role over time.
